Salem City has a population of approximately 170,000 and is 120 square kilometers. It is situated in the central region of the Willamette Valley, one of the world’s most fertile regions. The climate in this valley is quite temperate, making it ideal for agriculture, and farming is the main industry in the region. The food processing industry is also a mainstay, with annual production rising to nine million cases of canned goods and 200,000 tons of frozen food items.
Salem City is the state capital of Oregon, and on the strength of that has energetically promoted community improvement works over the years. Based on these and other achievements, Salem has twice received the National City Award from the Association of American Cities.
